Fall 2007

  • COMMITTEE WILL HOST DECEMBER DELEGATION

Our Archangel Committee has received a grant to host a five person "Education" delegation from the Solovetsky Islands and the City of Archangel from Friday, December 7 to Saturday, December 15, 2007. The grantor is the U.S. Library of Congress based "Open World Program" and such grants are made available to members of Sister Cities International. We are using this grant particularly to strengthen our relationship with Solovki that began with the December 2005 Open World delegation from those islands. Delegation members are Solovki Vice Mayor Natalia Yakovleva, Solovki Museum Director of Education Yuri Surikov, Malye Kareli Museum Director Alexander Shayev, Archangel Business Media Publisher Elena Kuznetsova and Archangel graduate student Ivan Tabanin (the facilitator).

The delegation will spend two days in Washington DC prior to arriving in Maine. In Washington, they will be hosted by the U.S. Library of Congress where they will be involved in roundtable discussions about American and Russian culture and where they will visit national historic sites in the city. Tentative plans also include a private meeting with Dr. James Billington, the Librarian of Congress; this meeting is planned because the Russian Co-Founder of the Open World Program in the late 1990's, the late Dmitri Likhachev, was once imprisoned in the Solovki Gulag (in the 1930's).

After their stay in Washington D.C., our friends will arrive at the Portland Jetport on Friday, December 7 and will have a busy week thereafter. Professionally, they will focus broadly on educational themes including municipal school budgets .and curricula, the education programs and outreach methods used by small Maine non¬profit museums, and the cooperation between public government and private businesses in educational endeavors. In addition, topics of special interest to each delegate will be addressed.

If you are interested in meeting professionally or socially with our friends, you have several opportunities to do so:

  • PORTSMOUTH NH WILL ALSO HOST IN DECEMBER 2007

The Sister City committee in nearby Portsmouth NH will also be hosting an Open World delegation December 7 to 15, 2007. This five person "Media" delegation is from Severodvinsk (which is the sister city of Portsmouth NH), a city located about 25 miles west of the City of Archangel. This delegation includes Severodvinsk television reporters Natalia Shustrova and Irina Shorshyeva, Severodvinsk newspaper reporter Artem Popov, Archangel newspaper editor Grigori Dityatev and Tver television reporter Ekaterina Karaseva (the facilitator). Both American committees want to bring the two delegations together if possible and two joint social events are planned. Our mutual goal is to strengthen the relationships between our four communities. FMI, call Alex Herlihy at 603-373-8933.
